Tea Rose Pearls
An Official Interest Group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®
Established in 2022 to serve Angleton, Brazoria, Freeport, Lake Jackson and Sweeny, Texas
Our History
In 2021, the process of becoming an official interest group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was initiated by Dr. Michalyn Demaris-Porter, a member of the organization. She recognized the need for growth and outreach of much-needed programs and community service while working in the healthcare field in Angleton, Brazoria, Freeport, Lake Jackson, and Sweeny, Texas. She was motivated to expand the sorority's footprint of service into an area with no ongoing presence from any service organizations.
Dr. Michalyn Demaris-Porter reached out to her fellow members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Mrs. Charvela Fearon, Mrs. Felecia Ransfer, Ms. Deirdre Barrett-England, and Dr. Nicole Walters to discuss the expansion of services to the underserved Southern Brazoria area. It was evident to everyone that expanding the service area in Angleton, Brazoria, Freeport, Lake Jackson, and Sweeny, Texas would be beneficial to this underserved community. They held their first planning meeting in February 2021 and met monthly to better understand the demographics and area growth potential. With a strategic plan in place for reclaiming inactive Sorors in the Southern Brazoria County Area, they eagerly anticipate the positive impact they will make in the community in the coming months. As the Organizer of the group, Dr. Michalyn Demaris-Porter contacted the South-Central Regional Director, Ms. Joya T. Hayes, to begin the initiation of the steps to become an official interest group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
That spark quickly grew into a flame. Together with 42 other exceptional women, a group interested in establishing a new chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was formed using the name “Tea Rose Pearls”. One year of hard work, continued service, and planning paid off, on February 25, 2022, Tea Rose Pearls received the vote from the Executive Body of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® to become an official interest group. The group of 42 swiftly went to work to reactivate and reclaim as many pearls as they could and quickly grew to 67 members with diverse backgrounds and a vast array of expertise and experience, but all with a common goal and desire to serve the people in Southern Brazoria County areas of Angleton, Brazoria, Freeport, Lake Jackson, and Sweeny, Texas.
